2023

The Friends sell their cow herd and Parks Canada takes over management of future cows on the ranch.

2020

The Friends publish the Pioneer Family Histories book as presented at the Stockmen’s Dinners in commemoration of the 25 years since the site was opened. 

2016

George Lane, former Bar U owner, is inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City after an extensive letter writing campaign by the Friends.

2013

After arrangements for years with third parties regarding cattle on the ranch, the Friends purchase their own cow herd.

2012

George Lane’s wagon is replicated as a result of a generous donation by Legacy Oil & Gas Inc. and is used as a proud entry in the Calgary Stampede Parade and many other local parades.

2007

The Friends of the Bar U Historic Ranch Legacy Fund is established and managed by The Calgary Foundation. Income from this fund is used to support programs and needs at the ranch. The capital stays in the fund and is never spent.

2002

Parks Canada takes over running the kitchen in the Visitor Orientation Center and purchases the kitchen inventory.

2000

The first Stockmen’s Dinner is organized by the Friends.  The annual Stockmen’s Dinner, a fundraiser, honours ranching families along the foothills of southern Alberta. The first Old Tyme Ranch Rodeo is held at the Bar U.

1995

The Bar U Ranch National Historic Site opens to the public. The kitchen and the gift shop are operated by the Friends.
